Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
