A comprehensive search and rescue operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search Operations Launched

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and search planes to find the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of 9 sailors, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island endures multiple power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country was initiated.

The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k operations cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have increased lately, with statements from different officials underscoring the complicated nature of bilateral relations.

In response to recent statements, a prominent government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its command to discover the sailboats and ensure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
