The Whites Keep The Reds at Bay to Earn Valuable Draw at Anfield

A pair of undefeated records continued intact at Anfield, however only one side could take genuine contentment from the result. Leeds United carried out a textbook strategy of frustrating and containing the hosts, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the lingering issues within the current champions' recent upturn.

Resolute Masterclass Secures Vital Point

A lacklustre goalless draw, the first in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely due to the defensive solidity of the outstanding defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, combined with the Anfield side's failure to break down a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to hopeful half-chances, and a sprinkling of boos echoed around the famous ground at the final signal on a laboured display.

"If I do not utilise the entire squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would not do this," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his past history was difficult. He is in incredible form but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to win over the heart."

Liverpool's Frustration in Front of Goal

Arne Slot's team initially displayed more zip and precision than in recent matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the right side. However, golden chances were scarce. The home side's best moments in the opening period fell to striker Hugo Ekitiké.

  • After a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a save from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
  • The visitors' goalkeeper could not hold the effort, requiring a timely intervention from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz converting the rebound.
  • Ekitiké later raced through onto a ball over the top but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his shouts for a spot-kick were waved away.

Spurned Opportunities Are Pivotal

Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to hit the target with his clearest opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong cross in the goal area, the striker misdirected a header that hit the goalkeeper while with an unguarded net.

For Leeds, their clearest sight of goal came from an Alisson mistake. The experienced shot-stopper sent a careless pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort returned down the centre was saved by the alert Alisson.

Scrappy Final Stages

The contest deteriorated into a bitty encounter, devoid on quality. The midfielder, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from range. The subsequent scramble resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, awarding the hosts a set-piece in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.

The Liverpool manager made a three substitution to bring urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his side in front from a set-piece, his header bouncing just past the post.

Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his scoring streak for the visitors in the closing stages, but his tap-in was ruled out for a tight offside. In the end, both sides had to accept a share of the points.
