Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
