The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
