Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, demons, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at the same party would be impossible.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group understands precisely where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, attacking the character, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as important members in House Halovar could assist the group reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This means them no alternative but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight players to form the Questers and Strategists parties.

Viewers can expect learning which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
