Aerial surveillance team with the local police department spotted the car driving dangerously on a freeway at approximately just after midnight after police stated the silver sedan had been observed street racing in another neighborhood, according to a law enforcement announcement. The state road police intercepted the vehicle and tried to perform a maneuver that entails striking a back panel of a fleeing car to cause it to lose control, called a pit, but it was ineffective. Highway patrol personnel “ended pursuit” as the car raced toward the vintage Ybor City area near downtown, local authorities said. Eventually, the motorist failed to maintain control of the car and struck more than a dozen people near the establishment, police confirmed. 3 victims perished at the scene and a fourth victim died at a medical facility. By the next day, a fifth victim was admitted in critical condition, and 8 additional victims were being treated at local medical centers but were listed as stable, authorities said. 2 additional individuals experienced slight injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are adults. “What happened today was a senseless tragedy, we are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were impacted,” the Tampa police chief said in a statement. Authorities named the suspect as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail. Court records indicated Sampson has been accused with 4 counts of vehicular homicide and 4 charges of serious fleeing or eluding with severe harm or death. All are first-degree felonies. No attorney was recorded for Sampson. “Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” said the city’s mayor, who also served as Tampa’s first female police chief, in a post on online platforms. “My thoughts are with the victims and families. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to get explanations,” she wrote. Lately, certain regions and municipal authorities have pushed to restrict the use of high-speed vehicle pursuits to protect both the public and officers. After a rise in fatalities, a recent study funded by the US justice department recommended police chases to be rarely used, explaining that the risk to suspects, personnel and onlookers often exceeds the urgent need to take someone into custody. However, Florida has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s highway patrol revising its guidelines to relax limitations on the application of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described these strategies as “dangerous” and “controversial”.
