Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
